Shape Up With Tarte Shape Tape Matte Foundation

If you're in the loop with everything that's going on in the beautysphere, you probably know why Shape Tape Matte Foundation caused such a huge uproar earlier this year. It's the most controversial liquid foundation that I've ever owned and believe it or not, it's all because of Rihanna! Ever since the launched of her cosmetics line "Fenty Beauty', Rihanna definitely raised the bar when it comes to shade selection. It's one of the reason why it's so successful and thanks to her, I do see lots of beauty brands out there following her lead.

Wondering why Tarte getting so many backlash regarding this issue? Well, Shape Tape Contour Concealer is very popular and widely rave by beauty lovers all over the world. Imagine the delight when Tarte finally announced the release of Shape Tape foundation and then, the disappointment when everyone discovered the limited colors offered! The thing is, I actually understand why Tarte went down that route. Shape Tape Contour Concealer is doing extremely well with only 14 shades selection all this while so they don't really feel the need to add more.

Despite all that, my curiosity gets the better of me and since both Shape Tape Foundation and Concealer are not available at the local Sephora yet, I purchased mine from Tarte Cosmetics website instead. To make sure I get the right shade, I tried the tester from their Rainforest of The Sea range which thankfully pretty similar with the Shape Tape Foundation. It matched me perfectly to light-medium neutral and for the concealer, I just go with my guts and choose one shade lighter which is light sand. It's way too light unfortunately but I still love it anyway!

Back to the foundation, it's actually comes in 2 different version; Matte and Hydrating. I'm choosing Shape Tape Matte Foundation for obvious reasons; it promise oil-free full coverage that feels weightless on skin with a modern matte finish. It also claims to provide the same full coverage as its concealing predecessor by smooths over pores and imperfections through its unique formula that absorbs oil and shine while leaving skin creaseless, hydrated, free of flakiness or cakiness and according to Tarte, it's also helps improving skin health with every application.

After using it for weeks, I think it's about time I share my thoughts with you lovelies. First thing first, the packaging. It's quite identical with the concealer, similar design, color and even the doe foot applicator. The only different is probably the material, the foundation comes in a glass jar meanwhile the concealer bottle seems to be made from plastic. The wand really make the application easier but it might not be very hygienic in the long run. The scent on the other hand is quite hard to describe, kind of like sunscreen. I don't exactly hate it but I don't like it either.

Here's the weird part; the texture, the coverage and the longevity are nothing like the concealer. Shape Tape Matte Foundation is more lightweight in terms of consistency and is not exactly full coverage. It's leaning more towards buildable medium to full coverage so you still going to need Shape Tape Contour Concealer to hide all the imperfections. I tried using it with 2 different primers but sadly the lasting power leave nothing to be desired. My foundation wear off after just couple of hours, clearly it's not as oil-free as it claims to be.

Moving on to the things that I love about this foundation, I like that it's not drying for my combination-oily skin. It feels comfortable on the skin compared to the concealer and delivers a nice demi-matte finish. It blends really well too especially with makeup sponge and I'm happy to say that it doesn't oxidize (at least not for me) like most of the foundation out there did. I've also noticed that Tarte finally added more shades for the deep skin tone category. Hopefully they've learn from this mistake and continue to grow as a cruelty-free and eco-friendly brand.

All in all, I can say that Tarte Shape Tape Matte Foundation doesn't really live up to its promises and a little overrated. They can work on improving the longevity and the coverage to match the concealer but they choose not to. Perhaps to make sure we'll keep on buying the Shape Tape Contour Concealer. Go for it if you feels like experimenting but I'm suggesting you to get the concealer instead if you haven't. For more details, head over to their official sites listed below and until then, I'm wishing you a wonderful week ahead lovelies, adieu~
